Inca Trail Peru Trek June 2009
We are a team of members from across the United States that is trekking the Inca Trail to the ancient city Machu Picchu. While doing so, we are also raising money to better the educational opportunities in Peru. We have partnered with Peruvian Hearts because of their commitment to improving education and nutrition standards in Peru.
Scott Bromley ![]()
My name is Scott Bromley. I live and go to school in Golden, CO at the Colorado School of Mines. I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering with Humanitarian Engineering and Economics Minors. I am graduating in December 2009, and currently work for GE in Longmont. Through my senior design project, I am helping a village in western Kenya design a structure that can catch rainwater and serve as a shower/laundry facility as well as a community meeting place. As part of this, education on the importance of hygiene and clean water is paramount. If I grow up, I hope to work in a sustainable engineering field such as alternative energy or transportation. In my short existence, I have found that I am happiest around those who, like me, aim to lose sight of the ground.
Lee Sullivan ![]()
My name is Lee Sullivan and this is my second adventure as part of Education Elevated. I met Gerri at a Nepal presentation and then became involved with the Base Camp Mt. Everest 2008 climb. After the thrilling experience of climbing to Everest, I feel empowered to do the same work elsewhere in the world. Education Elevated’s hike-a-thon concept is truly one-of-a-kind and I wanted to make use of the concept while in Peru. I’m currently a senior at the University of Colorado at Boulder studying Political Science of Asia. My interest in international education was sparked three years ago on a teaching assignment in China. Since then, I’ve returned to China a total of three times to teach English to under-privileged children.

The
mission of Peruvian Hearts is to enrich the lives of children living in Peru
through improved nutrition, education, and health care. Peruvian Hearts has
collected and distributed money, school supplies, vitamins, medicine, books,
stuffed animals, toiletries and other such items to help enrich the lives of
many children. Peruvian Hearts strives to provide the additional resources
needed in order to provide them with an environment that protects and nurtures
them physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Peruvian Hearts supports the 20 girls who are living at the Hogar Mercedes
de Jesus Molina in Anta, Peru. The Hogar Mercedes de Jesus Molina is a small
orphanage for abused and abandoned girls. It is located in a rural area in the
small town of Anta, just outside Cusco in the Andes Mountains. The Hogar is home
to 20 girls between the ages of six and seventeen years of age. Resources are
extremely limited, and Peruvian Hearts seeks to provide additional support,
which will enable the Sisters at the Hogar to give the children the
opportunities they need to heal and to grow, helping to empower them with the
opportunity of education.
Peruvian Hearts is also involved in several breakfast and lunch programs
in the towns of Anta, Lamay, Yanque, and Pampallacta that feed a daily
breakfast, lunch and a multivitamin to about 500 children daily. Some of these
children walk 2-3 hours each day to and from school. By providing these
children with daily multivitamins, Peruvian Hearts is trying to fight
malnutrition and allow these children to go to school each day without being
hungry.
